Troubleshooting a Dishwasher Hose Breakdown
Problem: Dishes come out of your dishwasher with black streaks on them. Black streaks on dishes can be caused simply by aluminum utensils that rub against them in the operation of the dishwasher. That's easy to fix. Load dishes so they don't come in contact with aluminum knives, forks, spoons, pots, and serving pieces. The thin aluminum will break down under heat, leaving hard-to-remove black stains on the dishes. If aluminum utensils are not a factor, the cause of the trouble may be the result of a breakdown of the interior of the hose that goes from the water-intake valve to the inside of the dishwasher. To find out, do the following:
1. Turn off the dishwasher circuit breaker. Try to turn on the dishwasher. Do not proceed until you have made sure the electricity has been disconnected.
2. Take off the access panel at the base of the dishwasher.
3. Find and remove the hose between the water-intake valve and the dishwasher. If this can't be done with the dishwasher in position under the counter, you will have to turn off the water, disconnect the water line to the dishwasher, and pull the dishwasher out from under the counter.
4. Push a cloth through the hose. If particles of matter come out, the hose has deteriorated. These particles are getting into the dishwasher and smudging the dishes.
5. Buy a new hose at an appliance parts store. Install the hose and restore the dishwasher to service.
Replacing Casters on a Portable Dishwasher
Problem: Your portable dishwasher doesn't roll smoothly across the floor.
Old or broken casters should be replaced. Get a repair kit from an appliance parts dealer. Use this procedure to replace the casters and, if necessary, the sleeves into which they fit.
1. Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet. Latch the door.
2. Spread an old mattress cover on the floor, and tip the dishwasher over so that its back panel rests on the quilt or mattress cover, with the casters facing you.
3. Pull the casters out of their sleeves. Push in the new casters. If they don't fit the sleeves securely, but keep falling out, you will have to replace the sleeves as well.
4. To replace the sleeves, use an electric drill to drill out the weld spots securing the sleeves to the dishwasher. Then get each sleeve off by tapping it with a hammer.
5. Place one of the small washers from the repair kit onto the threaded end of a caster. Insert the end of the caster through the hole in the dishwasher frame and place the other washer on it. Then screw the nut onto the ferrule by hand until you can't turn it any farther. Use a wrench to tighten the nut. Do the same at all the other corners of the dishwasher.
