Stemming an Overflow From The Standpipe

Problem: Water draining out of your washing machine overflows the standpipe.
To remedy this problem, do the following:
1. Remove the drain hose from the standpipe.
2. Bring garden hose (with its nozzle removed) down the standpipe and turn on the water at a slow flow. If the water backs up and overflows the standpipe, the plumbing system is clogged. If you can't relieve the blockage yourself, call in a plumber.
3. If the water from the garden hose does not overflow the standpipe, the problem may, be the result of an oversize drain hose or undersize standpipe. For drainage to take place, air has to flow freely between the hose and the sides of the standpipe. If the drain hose is too wide, or the standpipe is too narrow, the escape of air is restricted, and water will back up. Replacing the hose with one having a smaller diameter than the standpipe should resolve the problem.

Removing a burr in the Basket

Problem: Clothes come out of a washing machine showing rips and tears.
Ripped or torn clothes indicate that you're either using too much bleach, which weakens fabrics over time, or a burr or "catch" has developed in the basket and is snagging clothes. To repair a burr:
1. Wrap a piece of nylon stocking around your hall and wipe off over every inch of the basket.
2. Rub the burr gently with piece fine sandpaper. Then test the spot with the stocking to see if it is smooth.

Adjusting a Basket that Bangs Against the Chassis

Problem: The machine makes knocking noises as it washes.
Obviously the basket in your washing machine is striking some other part of the machine as it rotates. Here are several reasons that a basket will hit the chassis and what you call do about each one: The machine is poorly loaded. Make sure clothes are distributed evenly around the agitator when you load the machine. The washing machine is not level. To ensure that the washer is positioned correctly, place a carpenter's level along the side-to-side axis and then front to back oil the top of the machine. If the unit isn't level, check to see if the washer is resting oil an uneven patch of floor if so, shift the washer around until it is level, or adjust the legs to make it level. If the machine has movable legs, the front washer legs are threaded into the machine frame. Turn them out or in to lengthen or shorten the legs, until the carpenter's level shows that the machine is sitting evenly on the floor. The snubber is worn out. The snubber presents the basket from oscillating from side to side all hitting the chassis. If the rubber wears out it loses its ability to control the movement of the basket. (Not every washing Machine has a snubber. To replace a snubber, do the following:
1. Open the top of the washing machine. Find the snubber, which is located in one of the rear corners. It's a hard, rubberized, round object that is bolted to the top of the basket. A large metal spring, attached on one end to the chassis of the washer, fits over the snubber and restricts the movement of the basket.
2. Push the spring off the snubber, and unscrew it. Buy a new snubber and snubber spring that is made for your particular brand of washer.
3. Install the new parts by using a socket wrench or nut driver to take off the fastener holding one end of the spring to the chassis. If your machine is like most, the other end of the spring is hooked into a hole in the chassis. Unhook, it. Attach the new spring the same way as the old one and install the new snubber. Press the spring onto the snubber, close the lid, and restore power.
